9 Essential Ingredients in Prenatal Vitamins.

What are Prenatal Vitamins? They are multivitamins that contain folate, or folic acid, which is essential in pregnancy. Women should continue to take prenatal vitamins while they are breastfeeding. However, during breastfeeding you do not need a prenatal vitamin that contains iron because very little iron is transferred in breast milk. In fact, the recommended daily allowance of iron during breastfeeding is lower than for a non-pregnant, non-breastfeeding woman.

Actif Organic Prenatal Vitamin (link)

Pros:  These are the best prenatal vitamins, and the prenatal vitamins I am currently taking. This prenatal vitamin is organic. It also contains methyl-folate, 200mg of DHA, and probiotics. It also contains 30mg of iron which is the daily recommended amount of iron for pregnant women and 150mg of Iodine!

Cons: It contains Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) which is not as readily absorbed as D3. So you want to make sure you get vitamin D from the sun and/ or from your diet.

Like many of the other prenatal vitamins, it also does not contain any Choline, so you would need to take an additional choline supplement. While it does contain some Calcium, it only contains 200mg of Calcium and the recommended daily intake of 1000mg of Calcium.

Price: A bottle of 90 softgels costs $42.50. You only need to take one tablet per day. That means this vitamin is less than $0.50 per day, making it the most affordable recommended option on my list.

Honest Company’s Prenatal Once Daily (link)

Honest Company’s Prenatal Once Daily

Pros: I used to take Honest Co. prenatal once daily. I chose this vitamin because it has L-Methylfolate. This vitamin has the recommended dose of iron, iodine, and vitamin D3. Honest Company’s prenatals do also contain an organic fruit and vegetable blend.

Cons: Honest Company’s prenatal vitamin only contains 200mg of calcium. If you remember from my previous post, the recommended daily intake of calcium is 1000mg.

Additionally, it only contains 30mg of choline and it does not contain any DHA.

Price: These vitamins cost $0.67 per day.

SmartyPants Prenatals (link)

Smarty Pants Prenatal Vitamins

Pros: I took these vitamins for a while after the birth of my daughter. While breastfeeding you do not need a vitamin with iron, so these did the trick! However, they are expensive and I often forgot to take all 6! Smarty Pants prenatals are gummy vitamins, and they taste like candy! It has methylfolate, the active form of folate. It also contains vitamin D3 and iodine. To learn more about gummy vitamins, check out my article found here.

Cons: It has no iron or calcium and essentially no choline or DHA. So if you take Smarty Pants vitamins you should be sure to either get iron, calcium, choline and DHA from your diet or take a few supplements.

You need to take 6 vitamins a day! Luckily they are delicious. However, that is a lot of gummies.

Price: They cost about $0.66per day. So not cheap, but not really expensive.

Mama Bird AM/PM (link)

Mama Bird AM/PM

Pros: Mama Bird contains methylfolate. It also contains 300mg of Choline. With this prenatal vitamin you wouldn’t need an additional choline supplement. They offer an iron/ iodine free tablet and one that contains iron and iodine. As you might know, iron and iodine are essential during pregnancy so I strongly advise you to take the formulation that contains iron and iodine.

Cons: Mama Bird AM/PM only contains 100mg of Calcium. Although it contains Choline, it still doesn’t contain DHA. Also, make sure you remember to take this vitamin twice a day.

Price: These cost about $1.00 per day, making them these most expensive prenatal vitamins on my list.

Garden of Life mykind Organic Once Daily Prenatal Vitamin (link)

Pros: These prenatal vitamins are organic and VEGAN! They contain folate, Vitamin D3, iron and iodine. They are a once daily vitamin. Garden of Life also makes a “Raw” product, but that vitamin you need to take 3 times a day. I can barely remember to take my prenatal vitamin once a day.

Cons: These vitamins do not contain any Calcium, Choline or DHA. They also only contain 5mg of Zinc.

Price: 90 tablets costs $68, making these vitamins $0.76/day.
